Heat and Trail Blazers Secure Initial Victories After Player Detentions
Miami recorded 86 opening half points against the Grizzlies
Miami Heat claimed a overwhelming 146 to 114 win over the Memphis Grizzlies in their initial NBA game after guard Rozier was detained for alleged illegal gambling.
Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups was also detained as part of a broad federal investigation into sports betting. Both men contest the claims.
But, the Miami team were not distracted as they recorded eighty-six first-half scores to lead Memphis by thirty-nine at halftime, the biggest halftime lead in the team's 37 year history.
Adebayo led the way with twenty-four scores and afterwards said Rozier had the support of the team.
"We support him. Full support," Bam said. "We are with him all the way. That's our brother at the end of the day."
Heat coach Spoelstra added: "Terry is a person who is very dear to all of us. He's had a beneficial influence on our team.
"We send our thoughts and support for him as he faces the situation."
The Trail Blazers additionally secured their first game since the arrests, with Brazil-born Tiago Splitter taking over as interim coach in Chauncey's absence and leading the team to a convincing 139-119 win against the Warriors.
"We all had great experiences with Chauncey and his coaching style," Tiago said. "We're thinking of him and his loved ones but we have a job to do."
League Commissioner Adam Silver 'Upset' by Arrests
Speaking about the detentions for the initial occasion, NBA commissioner Adam Silver stated he was "deeply disturbed" by the incidents of the past few days.
"Nothing is more critical to the NBA and supporters than the fairness of the competition," he told Amazon Prime. "Therefore I felt uneasy. It was disturbing."
The commissioner further said an NBA investigation into the player's conduct in spring 2023, when there was "unusual wagering" in a game he played for the Charlotte Hornets versus the Pelicans, found nothing untoward.
"It was brought to our attention by the regulators and the betting companies," he continued.
"We investigated the matter and were open regarding it. Although there was that aberrational betting, we, honestly, couldn't find anything.
"The federal government has subpoena power... [it] can threaten to put people in jail, can take various actions that the league office is unable to.
"Therefore, we've been working with them from that point. And, of course, what they revealed recently was an charge.
"And two and a half years later, he still hasn't been convicted of any offense, in fairness to Rozier.
"Obviously, it doesn't look good, but he's been put on administrative leave, and so it is a balance in this case between protecting people's rights and investigating."
