Larry Summers Resigns from AI Company's Directors
One-time economic leader the Harvard professor is departing from the governing body at the artificial intelligence firm, just several days after a series of electronic messages between him and deceased financier Jeffrey Epstein became publicly available.
The economist stated in a release that he was "grateful for the privilege to have participated, optimistic about the promise of the company, and look forward tracking their advancement".
The former Harvard president, who formerly headed the prestigious university, declared on earlier this week that he would be withdrawing from public commitments due to his relationship with the convicted sex offender.
Email Communications
The recently released messages showed that the official communicated with Jeffrey Epstein until the eve of Epstein's 2019 arrest for accused human trafficking of young people.
In another announcement, the technology organization stated it respected Summers' choice to step down.
"We appreciate his numerous inputs and the perspective he provided to the Board," the company stated.
Congressional Action
This development arrives after the two houses of the US legislature voted on recently to endorse a legislation that would compel the US justice department to disclose its files on Jeffrey Epstein.
The legislation will subsequently move to the administration of US President Donald Trump for approval. The President has indicated he plans to endorse the measure, after modifying his position on the issue following pushback from his base.
Correspondence Findings
A batch of financier-linked emails disclosed by the Congressional committee days ago included numerous prominent individuals in the billionaire's former circle, without indicating any illegal behavior by those figures.
The messages revealed that Summers and Jeffrey Epstein regularly had dinners together, with he often attempting to introduce the academic to notable international personalities.
Personal Response
After the correspondence were made available with the general audience, he expressed he accepted "total ownership for my poor choice to persist in interacting with Jeffrey Epstein".
He further stated that he desired "to reestablish trust and fix bonds with the persons nearest to me".
Professional History
Summers served in senior posts under two Democratic presidents; acting as Treasury chief under President Clinton, and as head of the National Economic Council under the former leader.
He headed the institution from five years and continues to be a faculty member there. When announcing his withdrawal from public roles previously on this week, he stated he would maintain his teaching commitments.
Further Repercussions
Following Summers' announcement on Monday, the Washington think tank, a left-leaning think tank in DC where the professor was a senior fellow, announced that he was ceased to be associated with the institution.
Summers entered the leadership of the AI company, which develops the language model, in the previous year - following a unsuccessful effort to replace its top executive the company leader.
